Collection Retention Policy -- Draft
The UCSD Libraries’ collections grow by approximately 50,000 net volumes every year. Given our strategic commitment to maximize the use of campus library spaces to provide a variety of study, research, and cultural opportunities, the print volumes and other collections that remain in the campus libraries are carefully identified and continually monitored. Our first priority is to keep on campus those materials that are needed to support the University's current academic programs. We are fortunate to have a local Annex to house additional research-level materials across a wide spectrum of disciplines. In addition, the University of California system provides two Regional Library Facilities to support coordinated collection, shared print, and persistent retention activities across the UC campuses. We routinely transfer materials for which current or anticipated demand is relatively lower to the Southern Regional Library Facility (SRLF) in Los Angeles. The availability of books and, especially, journals online is an important factor in determining which print materials are transferred to UCSD’s and UC’s off-site storage facilities.
All UCSD volumes in the Annex and SRLF are included in Roger. The materials at the Annex or in the SRLF are available quickly and reliably to library users, who can request delivery from their computers and select the most convenient UCSD library location for pick-up. Journal articles from SRLF are delivered online.
